Former President Wavel Ramkalawan has called on the nation to reaffirm its commitment to integrity, transparency and good governance, in a message issued to mark International Anti-Corruption Day on 9 December.
In the statement from the Office of the 5th President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr Ramkalawan said that during his time in office, Seychelles maintained a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, a position he said was reflected in the country’s performance on global corruption indices.
He said Seychelles’ small and fragile nature makes economic stability dependent on trust and confidence in national institutions. He warned that corruption, abuse of power and unethical behaviour directly threaten national progress and the wellbeing of citizens.
Mr Ramkalawan urged the public to continue safeguarding the values of honesty, accountability and service, and to ensure that corruption has no place in institutions, communities or the country’s future. He also encouraged institutions, particularly the Anti-Corruption Commission of Seychelles (ACCS), to remain firm in their work.
He commended the commission for its efforts to ensure that public funds serve the wellbeing of the people and that best practices remain the standard for national institutions.
