The Constitutional Appointments Authority has advertised the post of Attorney General weeks after President Patrick Herminie questioned the body’s purpose and described it as one of the country’s most politicised institutions.

The Constitutional Appointments Authority (CAA) has opened applications for the position of Attorney General.

The vacancy follows reports that Mr Vinsent Perera, a Sri Lankan national, has left the post. He succeeded Mr Frank Ally in October 2024.

At the time of publication, neither the government nor the Office of the Attorney General had explained why Mr Perera is being replaced.

The recruitment comes shortly after President Patrick Herminie publicly criticised the Constitutional Appointments Authority, the same constitutional body responsible for recommending appointments to several senior public offices.

During discussions on institutional reforms, President Herminie described the CAA as “one of the most politicised organisations in Seychelles today”. He also said the authority had become redundant.

“If we had won two-thirds majority, the first change that we would have made is CAA. I agree with you that it is redundant and no longer serves its purpose,” President Herminie said.

He also said he would have closed the authority if he had the power to do so.

Despite those remarks, the CAA has now begun recruiting for one of the country’s most senior legal positions.

Under the Constitution of the Republic of Seychelles, the Attorney General serves a term of no more than seven years.

The CAA has invited applicants to submit a signed application letter, a detailed curriculum vitae, educational and professional certificates, two recent references dated 2026, a 2026 police character certificate and a passport-sized photograph.

Applications must reach the Office of the Chairman of the Constitutional Appointments Authority by 5:00 p.m. Seychelles time on Friday, 31 July 2026.

The Constitutional Appointments Authority comprises two members appointed by the government and two appointed by the opposition. Those members elect an independent chairperson.

The terms of office of most CAA members expire in 2032.
