A man has driven a vehicle into the main gates of State House in Victoria on Saturday afternoon, in what authorities have described as a security incident.
Video circulating on social media appears to show a driver travelling along State House Avenue before heading towards the entrance and crashing into the gate. In the footage, a man can be heard apologising and saying he would commit a crime.
Earlier in the day, other videos shared online appeared to show a man making political remarks about the government. It is not clear if the individual in those videos is the same person involved in the incident.
In a statement, State House said security personnel responded quickly and brought the situation under control. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported.
“A security incident involving an unauthorised vehicle entering the State House compound earlier today was swiftly contained by security personnel. No injuries were reported, and the situation is fully under control,” the statement said.
Authorities said the driver breached the main gate and caused damage to the entrance before security officers detained him. They then handed him over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
Officials added that the individual has been formally apprehended and will appear in court on Monday. They also said there was no threat to the President or staff, and that operations at State House continue without disruption.
President Patrick Herminie said he had been informed of the incident.
“I am aware of the situation and there was no threat to myself or to staff, and normal operations at State House continue without disruption. I strongly condemn this act of terrorism. Such actions will not be tolerated, and the necessary legal action will be taken,” he said.
State House said the incident was unacceptable and warned that such behaviour undermines the dignity of national institutions and the rule of law. It also reminded the public to respect state property and official premises.
The Seychelles Police Force is investigating the case. Authorities said further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
