The Seychelles Defence Forces marked Defence Forces Day with an official ceremony at the Military Training and Support Centre on Ile Perseverance. President and Commander-in-Chief Dr Patrick Herminie attended the event alongside senior military leadership, unit commanders, and personnel from military units and collaborating civil departments.
In his address, President Herminie paid tribute to the Seychelles People’s Defence Forces who, 44 years ago, defended the country during a significant threat to its sovereignty. He described the episode as a defining moment that tested the resolve of those who served.
He highlighted the ongoing work of Defence Forces personnel who protect Seychelles on land, at sea and in the air, noting that the institution’s strength is based on operational capacity as well as the integrity and unity of its officers.
The President reaffirmed the Government’s support for the professional development, wellbeing and empowerment of service members. He referenced evolving security demands, including maritime protection, disaster response and emerging transnational threats.
He expressed confidence in the Defence Forces’ ability to meet these responsibilities and thanked serving officers, their families and veterans for their contribution to national security and stability.
The ceremony included presentations of long-service awards to military personnel and civilian staff with 25 years or more of service. Certificates were also given to officers who completed the Commandos Training Course and to Seychelles Coast Guard personnel who completed Basic First Aid Training.
Chief of Defence Forces Major General Michael Rosette emphasised this year’s theme, “Let’s Strive for Excellence in Unity and Peace,” and called on personnel to uphold it.
In his closing remarks, the Commander-in-Chief urged service members to continue protecting the country’s sovereignty and to remain committed to addressing illegal activities.
