Kalsey Belle, 33, has been appointed as the youngest member of Seychelles’ newly formed Cabinet of Ministers, following her confirmation by the National Assembly on Tuesday, November 4. During her presentation to the assembly, Belle outlined her strong academic background and professional experience, having worked in both the public and private sectors.
She highlighted her expertise in science and technology, emphasizing her readiness to take on the responsibilities of her new role. In her address, Belle took time to explain her diverse career trajectory, which has been marked by seizing growth opportunities in various fields.
One of the key topics discussed during the interview process was the issue of decarbonisation and its integration into Seychelles’ future energy strategy. Several members of the assembly raised concerns about the use of nuclear energy, a major component of the United Seychelles party’s manifesto.
“Nuclear energy is a clean and reliable source of power,” Belle responded. “Many countries around the world, both governments and private sectors, are making substantial investments in it. I don’t want Seychelles to be left behind in these global advancements.”
The assembly also questioned Belle about her relative youth and leadership abilities. She responded with confidence, pointing out that despite being only 33, her career has seen her collaborate with colleagues much older and more experienced than herself.
“My age is not a barrier,” Belle stated. “Throughout my career, I’ve always worked alongside people who have more experience, and I’ve never seen that as a hindrance.”
After a comprehensive vetting process, Belle received overwhelming support from the 8th National Assembly with 27 members voting in favour of her appointment, earning her place in President Herminie’s Cabinet as the youngest minister.
