Seychelles’ only active para swimmer, Frederick Gappy of Aquafins Swimming Club, has set a new national record while competing in Dubai.
He took part in the 28th Speedo Invitational Short Course Meet over the weekend, where he competed in four races and recorded personal best times in each event.
In the 50 metres freestyle, Gappy posted a new personal best of 32.20 seconds. He also improved his 100 metres freestyle time to 1:14.93, down from his previous best of 1:20.93. In the 50 metres butterfly, he reduced his time from 45.46 seconds to 37.87. He completed the 50 metres backstroke in 43.62 seconds.
The result in the 50 metres freestyle set a new national record in his para swimmer category under the National Sports Council. Gappy trains under the guidance of head coach Robert Suzette at Aquafins Swimming Club. His performance was recognised with a medal at the event.
The achievement marks a milestone for the swimmer, his parents Mr and Mrs Gappy, his coach and the Aquafins Swimming Club. It also represents a significant moment for para swimming in Seychelles.
