The Seychelles Media Commission chairperson, Jean-Marc Lablache, has addressed his recent appointment and set out how he will use social media while in the role.
In a public message, Mr Lablache thanked those who congratulated him on his appointment. He said, “Your kind messages and support are truly appreciated.”
He also explained the role of the Seychelles Media Commission. It is an independent statutory body. The Commission promotes freedom of expression. It also ensures that the media operates within ethical and professional standards.
The Commission deals with complaints relating to the media. It also encourages responsible journalism. In addition, it supports the development of a fair and balanced media environment.
Mr Lablache clarified that the Commission does not regulate individuals’ personal use of social media or private opinions expressed online. He said this applies except in very specific circumstances defined by law.
Mr Lablache said he is mindful that the role requires independence, impartiality and sound judgment at all times. The new chairperson added that he will adopt a more measured approach to his personal use of social media.
“Going forward, I will refrain from commenting on political matters, media controversies, or any issues that could potentially come before the Commission,” Mr Lablache said.
He also said his posts will be limited mainly to general, personal or official matters. He added that he will avoid engaging in public debates that may give rise to a perception of bias or pre-judgment.
Mr Lablache said he will continue to respect the principles of fairness, neutrality and confidentiality that underpin the work of the Commission.
“This approach is necessary to preserve both the independence of the Commission and public confidence in its work,” he said.
He also thanked the public for their understanding and continued support as he undertakes the role.
