Divino Junior Sabino has been sworn in as the new Attorney General of Seychelles.
Mr Sabino took the oaths of allegiance and office at State House on Tuesday afternoon.
“I, Divino Junior Sabino, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Constitution of Seychelles,” he recited.
He pledged to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution, before completing the official oath.
President Patrick Herminie witnessed the swearing-in ceremony, alongside senior government officials and Chief Justice Rony Govinden.
Several members of parliament, members of the Constitutional Appointments Authority, family and friends of Mr Sabino also attended.
Mr Divino Sabino said he had wanted to contribute to the country throughout his career.
“I always wanted to help this country. I always wanted to do something for this country,” he said.
Mr Sabino referred to previous roles, including chair of the Financial Services Authority Appeals Board.
He also served as a board member of the Seychelles Credit Union and on its supervisory committee.
“All of these I’ve done for this country,” Mr Sabino said.
He said he applied for the Attorney General position because he saw it as another opportunity to serve Seychelles.
Mr Sabino acknowledged that his new position comes with a lot of work.
He said he wanted to emphasise respect for the rule of law as part of his responsibilities.
According to State House, Mr Sabino has more than two decades of experience in the legal profession.
His professional background includes law, arbitration, financial services, regulatory affairs and corporate governance.
He has also held senior leadership and advisory positions in regulatory, professional and national institutions.
These included chairmanship and board-level positions in financial services, anti-money laundering, media, cooperative and business sectors.
President Herminie congratulated Mr Sabino on his appointment.
He called on the new Attorney General to uphold the rule of law with independence, integrity and professionalism.
The president also called for stronger legislation and fair prosecutions without fear or favour.
He placed particular emphasis on tackling drugs, associated criminality and social disorder.
“The Attorney General’s Office must be a strong partner in the national response,” President Herminie said.
He also stressed the importance of accountability, due process and the presumption of innocence.
“Justice must not depend on who you are, whom you know, or the position you hold,” he said.
Mr Sabino replaces Vincent Perera, who served as Attorney General from October 2024 to 2026.
