Caroline Abel has resigned as Governor of the Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS).
Ms Abel tendered her resignation to President Patrick Herminie on 3 September 2026.
Her resignation will take effect on 16 September 2026, according to a CBS press communiqué.
Until the appointment of a new Governor, First Deputy Governor Brian Commettant will oversee the bank’s management and operations.
He will oversee the management and operations of the CBS as Chief Executive Officer.
The arrangement follows Section 6(6) of the Central Bank of Seychelles Act, 2004, as amended.
Ms Abel first became Governor on 14 March 2012.Her appointment made her the first woman in Seychelles to hold the position.
She was reappointed for a second six-year term in March 2018.
She began her third term on 14 March 2024.
Ms Abel has spent 32 years at the Central Bank, including 14 years as Governor.
The CBS said she worked to ensure the continued resilience of the institution during her time there.
Explaining her decision to step down, Ms Abel referred to the priorities she set when accepting her third term.
“In accepting a third term as Governor of CBS, I was guided by a commitment to further strengthen the institution’s leadership capacity and long-term sustainability,” she said.
She said her focus included leadership development and strengthening the institution’s capabilities.
She also highlighted stability, resilience, business continuity and long-term institutional effectiveness.
“I leave this office with confidence that CBS remains on the right path to fulfil its vision and mission,” she said.
Ms Caroline Abel added that the bank would continue delivering on its mandate to promote price stability and a sound financial system.
Ms Abel thanked the CBS Board, management and staff for their support.
She called on them to continue working hard and uphold the institution’s values and objectives.
She also thanked her family for their support, along with local and international organisations, the media and the public.
The CBS Board, management and staff thanked Ms Abel for her contribution and leadership.
They wished her success in her future endeavours.
Ms Abel joined the Central Bank in 1994 as a Senior Bank Clerk.
She became a Research Officer in the Research and Statistics Division in 1999.
She later became Senior Research Officer and Director of Research.
In 2006, she became Head of the Research and Statistics Division.
She became Deputy Governor in July 2010 and took up the role of First Deputy Governor in December 2011.
Ms Caroline Abel became Governor in March 2012.
Ms Abel holds a BA in Economics with Distinction from the University of Leeds.
She also holds an MPhil in Monetary Economics and Finance with Distinction from the University of Glasgow.
