The Catholic Church in Seychelles has announced that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Father Landry Philippe Rasamison as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Port Victoria.
The announcement was made by the Church in Seychelles. It said the appointment was received “with great joy and in a spirit of communion”.
Father Rasamison was born on 3 May 1972. He was ordained a Capuchin priest on 15 August 2000 in Madagascar. He carried out his ministry there before moving to Seychelles in 2008.
Since his arrival, he has served in several roles. He ministered at the Sacred Heart Parish of La Misère. Until now, he has been parish priest of Saint Michael Parish in Anse Aux Pins. He has also served as Superior of the Capuchin community in Seychelles.
Father Rasamison became a naturalised Seychellois citizen on 20 June 2017.
In its statement, the Church gave thanks for what it described as “this gift entrusted to us”. It also called for unity, trust and hope as the new bishop prepares to take up his responsibilities.
The Church also expressed gratitude to Alain Harel for his service to the diocese over the past five years. It thanked him for what it described as his “faithful and generous service”.
Bishop Harel will continue to lead the diocese as Apostolic Administrator until the official installation of the new bishop.
The Church said it hopes this period will mark a time of grace, renewal and commitment to its mission.
