President Herminie arriving at the Seychelles Police Headquarters

President Dr Patrick Herminie has made his first official visit to the Seychelles Police Force headquarters. He was accompanied by Vice-President Sebastian Pillay and the Minister for Homeland Security and Civil Affairs, James Camille.

The delegation held a familiarisation meeting with Commissioner of Police Ted Barbe and senior officers. The discussions focused on the country’s crime situation, institutional challenges and the ongoing reform programme within the Police Force. The review of the Strategic Plan and the Police Force Act was also highlighted.

Police officials raised the need for a new headquarters and a DNA laboratory. Commissioner Barbe said the current building lacks adequate space and that construction of a new headquarters at Perseverance is expected to begin next year. He added that the new facility will include improved holding cells in line with human rights standards.

President Herminie reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Police Force in maintaining public safety and upholding the rule of law. He praised officers for their professionalism and encouraged them to continue serving with integrity.

During the visit, the Seychelles Petroleum Company (SEYPEC) donated 40 body-worn cameras to the Police Force, valued at just over 240,000 Seychelles rupees. It is the first donation of its kind. The cameras were handed over by SEYPEC Chief Executive Sarah Romain to Commissioner Barbe.

Commissioner Barbe said the donation marks an important step towards more transparent and accountable policing. SEYPEC’s CEO said the contribution aims to strengthen the long-standing partnership between the company and the Police Force.

The cameras will be deployed by key operational units and at roadblocks to support transparency in police operations.
