Screen capture from a video circulating on social media shows food placed inside what appears to be a sea turtle carapace

A video circulating on social media shows a group of people eating food that appears to be served in what looks like a sea turtle carapace.

The footage has spread across several social media platforms. Online users have linked the video to a well-known businessman. However, this has not been confirmed. The date, location, and identities of those involved remain unclear.

The killing of sea turtles in Seychelles is illegal. A nationwide ban has been in place since 1994. It applies to all sea turtle species found in local waters.

Wildlife laws prohibit several activities. These include killing or catching turtles. Disturbing turtles is also banned. The law forbids possessing, selling, buying, or eating turtle meat. It also bans taking or selling turtle eggs. Possession or sale of turtle shells or related products is illegal.

In August 2024, penalties were increased to strengthen enforcement. Convicted offenders may be fined between SCR 25,000 and SCR 1 million. Courts may also impose prison sentences of up to seven years. Both penalties can be applied.

So far, law enforcement authorities have not issued any official statement on the video.
