SIF Activates Contingency Plan as Praslin Fire Threatens Fond Ferdinand Reserve

The Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF) says it has activated its fire contingency plan as a forest fire on Praslin threatens the Fond Ferdinand Nature Reserve.

In a press statement, SIF said the fire poses a direct threat to the reserve, which it manages.

The organisation said it is working under the authorities’ command to monitor and control the fire. Efforts include the creation of firebreaks to help prevent the blaze from spreading.

SIF said its immediate concern is the safety of nearby communities, response teams, wildlife and critical habitats in the area.

The foundation also confirmed that its personnel are present at command centres on both Mahé and Praslin. According to the statement, the centres have been activated to monitor the situation closely and take part in the decision-making process.

Meanwhile, the public has been urged to follow instructions issued by the authorities.

SIF added that more information will be provided when available.
