The Association for the Promotion of Friendship between Seychelles and China has issued a statement outlining Seychelles’ position on the One China Principle. The remarks were delivered on 25 April 2026 by Vincent Meriton. He serves as the association’s chairperson and is a former vice president.

The statement says Seychelles and the People’s Republic of China share a long-standing relationship of friendship and cooperation. It states that diplomatic relations began in 1976. This was shortly after Seychelles’ independence. It adds that the partnership has developed on mutual trust and respect. It also refers to a shared commitment to sovereignty and non-interference.

“As a small island state, Seychelles operates within an increasingly complex global environment,” Mr Meriton said. He added that the country has followed “a principled and balanced approach”. He said this is grounded in the longstanding position of being “a friend to all and an enemy to none”.

The statement says that since independence Seychelles has consistently adhered to the One China Principle. It recognises the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing China. It also affirms that Taiwan forms an integral part of China.

“In this regard, it is well established that, since independence, Seychelles has consistently adhered to the One China Principle,” Mr Meriton said.

The statement also says it supports the indivisibility of the People’s Republic of China. It adds that this position is not situational. In the statement, Mr Meriton describes it as a long-established element of foreign policy. It says this is rooted in respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“As Seychellois, we believe it is important that matters of foreign policy are approached with responsibility and perspective,” Mr Meriton said. He added: “Such issues should not be the subject of unnecessary politicisation.” He said they should instead be guided by realism and pragmatism. He also referred to a clear understanding of national interest.

The statement says Seychelles has long sought to maintain constructive and respectful relations with all partners. It adds that this approach is guided by dialogue and mutual understanding. The statement also refers to adherence to diplomatic principles.

It concludes that such an approach allows countries like Seychelles to safeguard national interests. It says this also contributes to a stable and cooperative international environment.
