Seychelles sewage pump failure caused spills in Victoria and Ile Perseverance

A Seychelles sewage pump station issue caused operational disruption and sewage spills in parts of Mahé, according to the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC).

PUC said it experienced technical problems with one of its main sewage pump stations over the weekend. As a result, the system faced limitations in transferring wastewater flows to the main treatment plant at Providence. The corporation said its teams worked continuously to resolve the issue.

PUC stated: “We have been experiencing technical issues with one of our main sewerage pump stations over the weekend.” The corporation added that the situation “has developed into operational limitations to transfer flows to the main plant at Providence.”

To reduce the risk of overflow, PUC engaged private cesspit emptiers. These teams assisted in transferring sewage from downstream pump stations. However, some spillages occurred. The discharge affected the sea at Ile Perseverance, near the Financial Intelligence Unit, and an area near the former playground in Victoria.

PUC said: “Members of the public are advised to exercise caution and avoid contact with affected water bodies.” The corporation issued this advice as a precaution following the reported spills.

PUC confirmed that its teams worked overnight to resolve the problem. The corporation said it aimed to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

Authorities implemented a temporary road closure from the STC roundabout to New Port between 18:30 and midnight. During this period, traffic was diverted through the STC Hypermarket car park to bypass the affected area.

PUC said it appreciated the public’s understanding as it worked to restore normal operations.
