The Land Waste Management Agency (LWMA) is calling on the public to use official bin sites across Seychelles to dispose of household waste.
The appeal follows ongoing reports of waste being dumped in areas not designated for disposal. One site of concern is Anse Aux Pins on Mahé, where residents have been leaving rubbish along the roadside. According to the LWMA, these locations were previously bin sites but were removed after private landowners withdrew permission due to misuse.
The agency says individuals caught disposing of waste improperly will face penalties. “At the moment the fine is 500 Seychelles rupees, but soon it will increase to 2,000 Seychelles rupees,” a representative said.
Businesses are required to follow a separate waste management process. They are encouraged to establish contracts with licensed contractors to collect and transport waste to designated landfill sites.
The LWMA is urging the public to follow proper disposal practices, warning that unmanaged waste can lead to public health risks, including outbreaks of dengue, leptospirosis and chikungunya.
