The Ministry of Health is appealing to the public to come forward to donate blood. Speaking to the media, Chief Laboratory Technologist from the Ministry of Health, Joanne Michel, says that for the past few weeks, the situation has worsened as donation has significantly decreased whilst demand for blood remained high, averaging between 5 to 10 units per day.
Mrs. Michel added that the Ministry is favoring O blood type donations as it is a universal blood type and the most commonly requested blood type in Seychelles.
At the moment, the Ministry of Health says that there are approximately 300 to 400 regular blood donors. The Ministry adds that this is well below the international recommendation of 1,000 regular donors for a population the size of Seychelles.
