Nurses in Seychelles gathered on Friday 15 May 2026 to celebrate International Nurses Day 2026 through a national nursing scientific conference organised by the Nurses Association of the Republic of Seychelles (NARS) and the Ministry of Health.
The event focused on this year’s International Nurses Day theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives”.
In her welcoming remarks, NARS President Rhonda Burka said the theme reflects the importance of supporting nurses and strengthening the healthcare sector.
“This theme is timely and deeply meaningful. It reminds us that the future of healthcare depends greatly on the strength, wellbeing, knowledge and empowerment of nurses,” Ms Burka said.
She added that nurses play several roles within the healthcare system.
“Nurses are not simply caregivers but leaders, educators, researchers, advocates, innovators, and the very foundation upon which the healthcare system continues to function,” she said.
Ms Burka also noted that this year marks the second National Nursing Scientific Conference organised by NARS. According to her, the conference reflects the association’s commitment to promoting evidence-based practice, research, innovation and professional excellence within nursing.
“We strongly believe that investing in nursing education and professional development is essential for the future of healthcare in Seychelles,” she said.
This year’s conference carried the theme “Nurses and Midwives Sharing Knowledge to Improve Health Outcomes”.
The conference aimed to strengthen nursing and midwifery research as a foundation for evidence-based practice. In addition, it provided a platform for nurses and midwives to present research findings, exchange professional knowledge, discuss innovations and best practices, and highlight ways to improve the quality, safety and responsiveness of health services.
Health Minister Marvin Fanny said the conference supports a culture of knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement within the healthcare sector.
“It is about creating a culture where knowledge is shared openly, where research informs practice and where healthcare professionals are empowered to continuously improve the care they provide to our people,” Mr Fanny said.
He added that the conference objectives align with the ministry’s wider vision for healthcare in Seychelles.
According to Mr Fanny, the ministry aims to build a health system that is evidence-driven, accountable and committed to quality outcomes for every Seychellois.
