Seychelles and the African Union have agreed to strengthen cooperation on food security, climate resilience and sustainable use of ocean resources during a meeting in Victoria. On Thursday, 20 November 2025, AU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, Moses Vilakati, met Ambassador Beryl Samson at Maison Quéau de Quinssy.

Both sides reaffirmed that agriculture is key to improving food security across Africa and agreed to continue working together on climate-resilient farming, aquaculture and capacity-building.
They also discussed the importance of using ocean resources responsibly and supporting blue jobs in fisheries, conservation and tourism. Commissioner Vilakati praised Seychelles for its leadership on issues facing Small Island Developing States, and for its Blue Bond and Debt-for-Nature Swap, which he said could guide other African countries.
The meeting highlighted the need for a unified African position on climate change and recognised the shared challenges faced by island states. They also discussed existing support through the EU Circular Strategy, the Drought Protocol and wider climate diplomacy.
Both parties considered plans for a regional meteorological station for island states and a multi-hazard early warning system. They agreed to form a Joint Working Group to take these initiatives forward.
Ambassador Samson also conveyed her best wishes to Commissioner Vilakati for the AU PRC Sub-Committee Dialogue Session on Environmental Issues taking place in Seychelles from 20–21 November.
