Exercise Lamitye 2026 has begun in Seychelles with a joint military training programme involving the Indian Army and the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF).

The opening ceremony took place on Monday 9 March 2026 at the Military Training and Support Centre (MTSC) at Ile Perseverance. The ceremony marked the start of a two-week exercise between the SDF and the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment.

Exercise Lamitye is a biennial joint military exercise between the Republic of Seychelles and the Republic of India. The programme began in 2001.

According to the Seychelles Defence Forces, the exercise aims to strengthen defence cooperation between the two countries.

“Exercise Lamitye, meaning ‘Friendship’ in Creole, is a biennial joint military exercise between the Republic of Seychelles and the Republic of India,” the Seychelles Defence Forces said in a statement.

The SDF added that the exercise aims “to strengthen defence cooperation, enhance interoperability between the two forces, and promote the exchange of operational knowledge and military skills”.

During the opening day, both contingents presented the history, traditions and military heritage of their respective nations.

Participants also attended a case study presentation on Operation Black Tornado, conducted by the Indian Army.

In addition, soldiers from both forces held familiarisation sessions on the weapons and equipment used by each contingent. These sessions allowed personnel to understand each other’s operational capabilities.

Later, the two contingents played a volleyball match. Organisers said the activity aimed to promote camaraderie and cooperation between the soldiers.

In the coming days, Exercise Lamitye 2026 will include joint tactical drills, training exchanges and field activities.

The Seychelles Defence Forces said these activities aim to strengthen professional ties and improve the ability of both forces to operate together effectively.
