The Commission of Inquiry into the Lease and Development of Assomption Island has warned the public about a fraudulent Facebook profile. The profile impersonates its Commissioner, Mathilda Twomey-Woods.

In a statement, the Commission said the account, operating under the name “Mathilda Twomey”, is unauthorised and has been used to solicit funds. It said the profile has no connection to the Commissioner or to the inquiry.

The Commission clarified that the Commissioner does not maintain a personal Facebook profile for official communication. It added that any statements, posts or requests made through the fake account are false and should be ignored.

Furthermore, the Commission confirmed that it has reported the impersonation to the relevant authorities. It has also reported the matter to Facebook and requested the account’s immediate removal.

“This deceptive activity is a serious matter that undermines public trust and may constitute a criminal offence,” the statement said.

A direct warning was also issued to those responsible for the account. The Commission said they must stop the impersonation immediately or face legal action.

For verified information, the public has been advised to rely only on official updates. These are published by the Office of the Commissioner through its website.
