Ramkalawan Pledges Full Co-operation with Assomption Inquiry

Following the publication of the Official Gazette of 9 December 2025 announcing the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry for the Island of Assomption, former President Wavel Ramkalawan has said he will fully co-operate with the investigation led by Commissioner Justice Dr Mathilda Thomey. In a statement issued after the Gazette’s release, Mr Ramkalawan said he would provide all information required under the terms of reference.

He said he expects the work of the Commission to be conducted with transparency and fairness, noting that public clarity on the Assumption project is important. “Transparency will allow the truth to be brought out openly for the public to understand the details of the project,” he said.

The document establishing the Commission refers specifically to Mr Ramkalawan’s State visit to the Maldives from 11 to 14 June 2023. He said he is prepared to give all details requested and called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to co-operate fully by providing information and a complete report on the visit. He added that his discussions during the visit did not compromise the integrity with which the Assomption project was managed by his administration.

Mr Ramkalawan said he wishes for his appearance before the Commission to be broadcast live on television and radio so that the public can hear his statements first-hand and assess the facts for themselves.
