The National Assembly has approved the appointment of Wallace Cosgrow as Seychelles’ new Principal Minister, following the presentation of his nomination on Friday, 14 November 2025.
The motion was tabled by the Leader of Government Business, Sylvanne Lemiel, who outlined Mr. Cosgrow’s career and previous ministerial experience during her address to the Assembly.
A debate followed, giving members an opportunity to voice their support or concerns.
The Leader of the Opposition, Bernard Georges was the first to respond. He criticised the timing of the motion, arguing that it should have been brought before the Assembly during the approval process for other ministers. However, he acknowledged Mr. Cosgrow’s capability, saying he believed the nominee possessed “the qualities and competence to become the Principal Minister”. He urged Mr. Cosgrow to adopt a more inclusive approach to decision-making for the benefit of all Seychellois.
Egbert Aglae, the elected member for Port Glaud, also commented on the timing of the motion, noting that it would ideally have been presented earlier. Nonetheless, he said the heavy schedules of both the Cabinet and the Assembly had contributed to the delay. Mr. Aglae expressed his support for the nomination, highlighting several attributes he felt made Mr. Cosgrow suitable for the post.
Following contributions from both sides of the House, the Assembly voted in favour of the appointment, with all 18 United Seychelles members supporting the motion. Members from the opposition party, Linyon Demokratik Seselwa, abstained from voting.
