The resident High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Seychelles, Jeffrey Glekin, has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s support for national development and security initiatives in Seychelles.
Mr Glekin paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Barry Faure, at Maison Quéau de Quinssy on Thursday, 22 January 2026.
During the meeting, the two diplomats discussed historical ties between the two countries. They also reviewed current areas of cooperation that benefit Seychelles.
Mr Glekin updated the minister on programmes the United Kingdom is implementing with the Government of Seychelles. These include capacity building in good governance, policing, and efforts to tackle corruption and financial cybercrime.
In addition, he highlighted support from the UK Hydrographic Office for seabed mapping. The initiative contributes to maritime safety, strengthens security, and supports environmental protection in Seychelles’ waters.
The High Commissioner also outlined the United Kingdom’s recently launched Small Island Developing States Strategy. The policy reinforces the UK’s engagement with island nations, including Seychelles.
Meanwhile, Mr Glekin introduced the UK’s new defence attaché, Simon Smith. Major Smith is based at the Regional Coordination of Operations Centre in Bois de Rose and works with regional partners on maritime security cooperation.
In response, Minister Faure thanked the British Government for its continued support across multiple sectors. He said the two countries could also explore additional areas of collaboration.
The discussion further touched on the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Independence of Seychelles. Minister Faure expressed hope for the participation of the United Kingdom in the celebrations.
