Police statements on the arrest of two men for suspected unlawful possession of firearms have been contradicted by court documents prepared by the police and presented by State Counsel.

In a press release dated 20 January 2026, the Seychelles Police said two men had been arrested following an operation in which “firearms and ammunition were seized and secured as exhibits for investigative purposes”.

However, when the two men appeared before the Magistrates’ Court earlier the same day, official court records presented a different account of what was recovered.

According to the court documents, which were prepared by the police and supported by an affidavit signed by a detective police inspector on 20 January, officers retrieved two black firearm magazines from a property.

The documents state that the magazines were rusty and engraved with the marking “PPQ Walter”. They also confirm that the magazines contained 14 rounds of ammunition.

The affidavit further states that the magazines were examined by an armourer from the Response Service.

Court records show that police intend to carry out further enquiries. These include cross-checking the magazines and ammunition against licensed firearms records held by the military and the police.

While investigations continue, the two men have been remanded in custody for seven days.

The Seychelles Police have not issued a correction or provided an explanation for the difference between the information contained in the press release and the details presented in court.
