In this special series, Parenting on the Spectrum, we meet parents who are navigating the unique challenges and blessings of raising a child with autism. Though autism is still a relatively new area of understanding and diagnosis in Seychelles, many families have shown extraordinary strength, coming together through support groups, personal commitment, and sheer love to create nurturing environments for their children.
In our first story, we meet Eddy Desnousse, a devoted father of two whose journey with his eldest son, Brendan, has been one of courage, learning, and unconditional love. Brendan who is 9 years old today, was diagnosed with autism at just two and a half years old. Before the diagnosis, Eddy and his wife, Stephanie, began to notice changes in their little boy.
Brendan had become less responsive and showing little interest in interaction. Their concerns grew when Brenden did not pass his developmental assessment at that same age, a moment that marked the beginning of a journey filled with both uncertainty and hope.
“It has been a very difficult journey, the unknown,” Eddy recalls. “But we overcame this complex situation through support of our family, friends, and work colleagues.”
As a proud father, describing his son, Eddy says, “Brendan is a very loving boy, curious but timid around strangers.”

In the early years, Brendan faced several challenges, especially in communication and social interaction. Like many children on the spectrum, he also developed particular eating habits. “He was fussy,” Eddy adds and says that through their support system, the family managed.
Through extensive research, persistence, and the encouragement of local support networks, the family began to see remarkable progress. Today, Brendan can read, write, and express himself more freely. He’s even become more adventurous with food, a small but meaningful victory for the Desnousse family.
Eddy’s message to other parents walking a similar path is simple but powerful, “Never give up!.” As for his hopes for the future, Eddy’s voice fills with quiet pride and optimism.
“I hope and pray that as Brendan gets older, he can achieve and be successful at whatever he sets his mind to, without having his condition limit him”.
The Desnousse family’s story is one of perseverance, love, and the belief that every child; regardless of where they fall on the spectrum; has something truly special to offer the world.
