Former Seychelles president Wavel Ramkalawan has criticised a series of declarations and decisions taken by the incumbent president, Dr.Patrick Herminie.
Mr Ramkalawan made the remarks during a live press conference with local media in Seychelles on Monday, 26 January 2026.
He said he felt personally targeted by the current administration. In particular, he raised concerns about his security arrangements and access to a dedicated office as a former president. He also raised concerns about the allocation of official transport to his office.
“I don’t understand why this simple courtesy cannot be extended to me as I did with former president Danny Faure,” Mr Ramkalawan said.
He also rejected claims that one of his bodyguards had been arrested and was facing a military court martial. However, he confirmed that a bodyguard had been summoned to army headquarters at Bel Eau for questioning. According to Mr Ramkalawan, the accusations were later dismissed.
Turning to the judiciary, Mr Ramkalawan accused the executive of serious interference in the judicial system. He referred to a recent presidential pardon granted by President Herminie to two former inmates previously convicted under terrorism legislation. He warned that such decisions could lead the country in the wrong direction.
Mr Ramkalawan also spoke about online abuse, particularly on Facebook. He named two individuals whom he alleged were employed at State House and were repeatedly attacking him online.
At the close of the press conference, Mr Ramkalawan urged President Herminie to unite the people of Seychelles rather than create division. He further called on the president to address the nation openly if he was unable to fulfil promises made during the election campaign.
