The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Lin Nan, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Finance, Trade, Economic Planning and Investment, Pierre Laporte. The discussion centred on cooperation between the two countries. During the meeting, the China grant Seychelles State House partnership was also highlighted.
Ambassador Lin confirmed that China is providing a grant of US$500,000 for security equipment at State House. The support forms part of ongoing cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, the Minister and the Ambassador also reviewed broader areas of collaboration. China continues to support national housing and development projects in Seychelles.
In addition, the Minister referred to a previous request for a scanner to be used at the Seychelles port of entry. The equipment is intended to support operations at the border. Both sides agreed that a follow-up letter referencing the earlier request will be prepared and transmitted as soon as possible for consideration.
Separately, the Minister confirmed that a new trade agreement between Seychelles and China will be submitted to Cabinet shortly. Both sides also discussed challenges affecting trade. These included limited direct shipping and flights, supply chain constraints, and business payment concerns.
