To celebrate four years since the launch of the aquaculture industry in Seychelles, the Aquaculture Department at the Seychelles Fisheries Authority recently held an open day at its Broodstock, Acclimation, and Quarantine Facility (BAQF).
A large number of people came to gain insights about the facility, which is essentially the core of the relatively new industry. Situated at the Providence fishing port, the multi-species BAQF administers quarantine treatments to wild-caught broodstock and acclimates species such as grouper and snapper for reproductive life in a controlled environment.

During the open day, the facility welcomed a variety of visitors, including students from numerous schools and educational organizations on Mahé.
To note, the fisheries sector plays an important role in Seychelles’ economy, and it is estimated to be worth around 400 million United States dollars, driven by industrial fishing and tuna export.
