David Pierre Faces Mixed Reactions During Ministerial Nomination Hearing

The fifth proposed minister to appear before the National Assembly on Friday October 31, 2025 was Mr. David Pierre, who presented his credentials and answered questions from Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) as part of his nomination process for President Herminie’s new Cabinet.

In keeping with earlier sessions, Mr. Pierre was questioned by members following the presentation of his professional background. However, participation was divided along party lines, with only members from United Seychelles (US) engaging in the interview. Members of Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) chose not to take part in the questioning.

Much of the discussion centered on education, reflecting Mr. Pierre’s extensive career in the sector. Sandra Sultan, the elected representative for Anse Aux Pins, asked about his plans to decrease the use of foreign teachers in Seychelles.

“There are many impediments that make it difficult for teachers to deliver,” Mr. Pierre said in response. “We will make sure, as much as possible, to address these impediments. We need to give value to our teachers and show respect to them.”

After the interview, the Assembly debated the motion to approve Mr. Pierre’s nomination. United Seychelles members spoke in favor of his appointment, while Linyon Demokratik Seselwa representatives voiced strong opposition. Opposition Leader Bernard Georges criticized President Herminie’s choice, saying Mr. Pierre’s personal motivations had compromised his integrity.

“We know Mr. Pierre very well, and he had an exemplary career in politics up until 2010. His character has been tainted by his ambition and money.” Mr. Georges stated.

When the vote was called, 17 United Seychelles members voted in favor while 14 members opposed the nomination. Mr. Pierre was one of four proposed ministers to appear before the National Assembly on Friday. While three other nominees were approved without contention, Mr. Pierre’s nomination drew the most debate of the day.
