Azarelle Ernesta has made history as the first woman elected Speaker of the National Assembly of Seychelles. In accordance with Article 83 of the Constitution, Ernesta was nominated by United Seychelles member Sylvianne Lemiel and seconded by Egbert Aglae from the same party. At precisely 9:48 a.m., the newly elected Speaker was officially sworn in.
The session, initially presided over by outgoing Speaker Roger Mancienne, also saw the swearing-in of newly elected members following the October 2025 general elections, in which United Seychelles won a majority of seats, ending Linyon Demokratik Seselwa’s (LDS) previous dominance.

Mrs. Ernesta, a proportional member representing United Seychelles, brings extensive parliamentary experience to her new role. She previously served as Clerk of the National Assembly from March 2012 to May 2025, succeeding Veronique Bresson and later being succeeded by Shelda Commetant.
Beyond politics, Mrs. Ernesta is also recognized for her contributions to the arts, particularly her intricate cross-stitch creations, which have been featured in local exhibitions. In 2024, she made her debut as a fashion designer during Seychelles Fashion Week, showcasing her creative versatility.
