Clock Tower in Victoria dismantled for restoration

Passersby in Victoria on Tuesday afternoon saw that the Victoria Clock Tower restoration had reached a new stage, as the structure no longer stood in its usual form at the centre of town.

The Clock Tower, also known as Lorloz, has stood in Victoria since 1903. Since Sunday, teams have carried out work to remove sections of the monument as part of refurbishment and restoration works.

The dismantling forms part of a process to inspect and repair the structure.

Gerald Coombes-Winyard, operations manager at Gillett & Johnson and an international expert overseeing the work, described the progress.

“So basically we’ve removed half of it,” he said. “The other three sections have been removed and are disconnected from the ground.”

He added that further work is still required before the process is complete.

“But we need to disconnect them internally. So we are going to do that tomorrow, once we have more time, because it is going to take a few hours to do.”

He also outlined the next stage of the operation.

“So come tomorrow afternoon, all parts will be separated, taken over to the warehouse for a full inspection and for repair works.”

The restoration work is ongoing.
