Seychelles Mauritius cooperation is expected to expand as both countries plan several agreements in fisheries, agriculture, culture and statistics.

The initiatives are linked to the upcoming celebrations marking the 58th anniversary of the independence of Mauritius. Dr Patrick Herminie is expected to attend as guest of honour, according to information reported by Mauritian media outlet Top FM.

According to the report, fisheries will be one of the main areas of cooperation between Seychelles and Mauritius. One proposed agreement concerns access for Seychellois vessels to the Mauritian fishing zone. The arrangement is linked to the promotion and implementation of responsible fishing by Seychellois vessels operating in that area.

The report also states that both sides plan to sign a memorandum of understanding. The agreement will cover research, institutional development and capacity building. The agreement would focus on cooperation in agriculture as well as sanitary and phytosanitary sectors. The aim is to establish a long-term partnership that uses the complementary expertise of both countries.

In addition, the two islands plan to twin two historical locations. These are Le Morne Brabant and Venn’s Town Mission Ruins, where archaeological excavations have taken place.

A programme of cooperation in the arts and culture for the period 2026 to 2029 is also expected to be on the agenda. The programme involves the Government of Mauritius and the Government of Seychelles. According to the report, the programme aims to encourage exchanges of information on cultural policies and promote activities linked to folklore and traditions in both countries.

Another planned agreement involves cooperation in statistical development. The memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed between Statistics Mauritius and the National Bureau of Statistics Seychelles.

The framework aims to improve the production and dissemination of official statistics, strengthen institutional relations and support capacity development between the two institutions.
