The Ministry of Tourism and Culture has launched an open call for the design of a national monument to commemorate the Abolition of Slavery. The initiative invites artists, designers, and creative practitioners to submit proposals for the project.

According to the Ministry, the monument will recognise the history and legacy of enslaved men and women. It will also mark the annual observance of the Abolition of Slavery on 1 February.

In a statement, the Ministry said the monument will “honour history, memory, freedom, dignity, and identity.”

Moreover, the Ministry is encouraging broad participation from the creative community. It said the project aims to create a national symbol of remembrance for future generations.

Application forms became available from 1 February 2026. They can be collected at the National Library and the National Arts and Crafts Council. Submissions may also be completed online through the official cultural encounters website or sent by email to the Seychelles Heritage Foundation.

The submission deadline is 1 April 2026.

The Ministry has urged interested participants to consult the official poster for full application details and submission guidelines.
