The government of Seychelles has invested more than 30 million rupees in projects aimed at addressing the effects of climate change along several coastlines.
On Mahé, coastal protection works are under way at Au Cap, Beau Vallon, and North East Point.
The principal officer for climate adaptation at the Ministry for Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources, Anie Simeon, said the project at Au Cap is expected to be completed by April 2026. However, she noted that the work could face a delay of up to one month.
She explained that adjustments may be required because beaches change depending on the monsoon season. She said this reflects the dynamic nature of coastal environments.
Meanwhile, at Beau Vallon, the Ministry for Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources is working in collaboration with the Seychelles Land Transport Agency. According to the ministry, two priority areas have been identified. These focus on protecting the coastline and nearby road infrastructure.
The Beau Vallon project is expected to be completed within six months. A similar coastal protection project is also under way at North East Point.
To note, the government is financing eight ongoing projects this year to address coastal erosion nationwide.
One of these projects targets erosion at Anse La Blague on Praslin. The Ministry of Environment will implement measures to protect the eroded coastline. The project also includes improvements to road infrastructure and drainage systems in the area.
