The Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources has announced the creation of an Inter-Sectoral Environmental Task Force for Assomption. The body will coordinate urgent environmental actions and address related matters concerning Aldabra.
In a press release, the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s sovereign rights. It also aims to ensure the clear discharge of constitutional responsibilities for Assomption, Aldabra and all Seychelles islands.
The task force will be chaired by the Minister for Environment, Marie May Jeremie. Dr Nirmal Shah, Special Adviser in the Office of the President, will serve as deputy chair.
The task force will bring together senior officials from key institutions. These include the Islands Development Company, the Seychelles Islands Foundation, the Planning Authority, the Principal Secretary for Lands and Biosecurity authorities. Other relevant agencies will also participate.
Selected technical officers from the ministry will attend meetings as observers. They will provide technical advice and support follow-up action.
According to the ministry, the task force will engage with non-governmental organisations. It will also consult the private sector and other stakeholders.
The ministry said the task force’s mandate includes agreeing on and coordinating priority environmental measures for Assomption. It will also consider relevant issues linked to Aldabra. Planned actions include a comprehensive biodiversity assessment and stronger biosecurity planning and measures.
The ministry said it intends the task force to operate in a transparent and inclusive manner. It said this approach aligns with government policy and good governance principles.
The process will involve structured engagement with NGOs, civil society and the private sector. Where appropriate, the ministry said it will publish key findings. This, it added, will support informed participation and evidence-based decision-making, while respecting government mandates and sovereign authority.
