US Ambassador for Mauritius and Seychelles recalled amid wider Africa reshuffle

The Ambassador of the United States of America to the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. Mr. Henry Jardine, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Mr. Barry Faure, on Tuesday, 9 December 2025, at Maison Quéau de Quinssy.

As the Seychelles Ambassador to the United States presented her credentials in Washington, the United States recalled its ambassador to Mauritius and Seychelles as part of a wider diplomatic reshuffle affecting several African postings.

The recall forms part of a broader decision by Washington to end the tenures of a number of US chiefs of mission across Africa. According to The Guardian, “the chiefs of mission in at least 29 countries were informed last week that their tenures would end in January,” citing two US State Department officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The move comes despite recent US investment in its diplomatic presence in Mauritius. In May 2023, the US Embassy announced the groundbreaking of a new embassy campus in Moka Smart City. The United States said it would invest approximately US$300 million in the project, describing the campus as a secure and sustainable facility intended to support diplomatic relations and improve services for visa applicants.

The US Ambassador to Mauritius and Seychelles, Henry V. Jardine, was nominated in July 2022 and confirmed in December that year. He is a member of the US Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor.

The recall coincides with the accreditation of Seychelles’ ambassador to the United States, Vivianne Fock Tave, who presented her credentials to President Donald Trump recently. The accreditation marks the formal start of her diplomatic duties in Washington.

At present, Seychellois nationals travelling to the United States are required to submit visa applications through the US Embassy in Mauritius, where applicants must attend mandatory in-person interviews. By contrast, US citizens continue to enjoy visa-free entry to Seychelles for short stays, subject to a compulsory online travel authorisation

During his recent visit to Seychelles in December 2025, Ambassador Jardine met several senior figures in the newly elected administration. They included Vice President Sebastian Pillay, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora Barry Faure, and the Minister for Homeland Security and Civil Affairs James Camille.

Officials said the meetings focused on strengthening cooperation between the United States and Seychelles across shared priorities, with discussions centred on deepening bilateral engagement.
