The Supreme Court of Seychelles has granted bail to Mukesh Valabhji and his wife, Laura Valabhji, allowing the first accused to undergo cataract surgery and releasing the second accused on similar terms.
In the ruling delivered on 2 December 2025, Chief Rony Justice Govinden said new medical reports submitted by the defence and prosecution showed that the first accused required surgery that could not be performed under remand conditions. The court found that the medical evidence presented was uncontested and constituted a significant change in circumstances.
The prosecution did not oppose the application, and the court ruled that continued detention would prevent the first accused from receiving necessary treatment. The judge also noted that keeping the second accused in custody while all other co-accused had been released on reasonable conditions would be unfair.
Both accused were released on bail under several conditions. They must provide the date of the surgery to the court within three days, remain within Seychelles, surrender their passports, report weekly to the Central Police Station, remain contactable by phone, and refrain from committing offences while on bail.
The order was issued to the Commissioner of Police, Commissioner of Prisons and the Principal Secretary responsible for Immigration.
