The cost of internet services in Seychelles could decrease substantially, according to President Patrick Herminie.
Speaking on the issue, Dr Herminie said satellite internet provider Starlink has made a formal representation in the country. He added that the Department of Information, Communications and Technology, DICT, has until April 2026 to present a plan to the Cabinet of Ministers on the way forward.
The President said there is willingness from both sides to move discussions ahead. However, he stressed that a clear and decisive methodology is required.
He outlined possible options under consideration. These include whether Starlink would partner with an existing company or operate as a standalone service in Seychelles.
Dr Herminie said exploring the introduction of Starlink could bring broad benefits to the population. He noted that digitalisation is now essential to national development.
“To have an efficient government, we need to have a smart government or e-governance,” President Herminie said.
He maintained that improved digital infrastructure remains central to strengthening public services and governance in the country.
