European Parliament Fisheries Committee assesses Seychelles–EU fisheries partnership through SFA visit

An EU fisheries delegation Seychelles conducted a two-day evaluation visit to the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA). The delegation examined local fisheries management practices. It also assessed how Seychelles and the European Union implement the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA).

Emma Wiesner led the delegation. The team aimed to evaluate the agreement’s impact and identify lessons for the future. In summary, EU fisheries delegation Seychelles leaders were committed to identifying improvements.

During the visit, SFA officials presented their monitoring, control and surveillance activities. They outlined measures to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Management also emphasised the need to continue and strengthen cooperation between Seychelles and the European Union, a key focus for the EU fisheries delegation Seychelles.

The delegation visited the EU-funded Broodstock and Quarantine Facility at Providence. Officials explained how the facility supports the development of Seychelles’ aquaculture sector.

The MEPs met fishermen and representatives of fishermen’s associations at community facilities in Cascade and Anse Aux Pins. These discussions showed how sectoral support benefits the local fisheries industry and coastal communities.

Certainly, this visit by the EU delegation demonstrated their commitment to sustainable fisheries management and sector development in Seychelles.
