Cuban Ambassador Bids Farewell to Seychelles After Four-Year Tenure

The outgoing Cuban ambassador to Seychelles, Martha Hernandez Caneiro, paid a farewell visit to President Patrick Herminie on Tuesday, 25 November 2025. Mrs Hernandez Caneiro described the meeting as “fruitful”, noting that discussions focused on the historical ties between Seychelles and Cuba, a relationship that has spanned almost 48 years.

She has served as the Cuban ambassador to Seychelles since 2021. Reflecting on her four-year tenure, she said it had been “a useful four years”, adding: “We worked in favour of strengthening our relationship.”

She cited seven legal instruments, in the form of Memoranda of Understanding, signed between the two governments. Mrs Hernandez Caneiro highlighted the most recent agreement, a health cooperation accord, which she described as “very important” and said “will have a big impact on the population and health standards”.

She also said her time in Seychelles had been an important period of professional development and thanked the population “for accepting me”.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Barry Faure, was also present at the farewell visit.
